Longstanding Ford RS dealers Brooklyn Ford of Redditch, near Birmingham, secured Ford sponsorship to run an RS1600i in the 1983 British Saloon Championship. Promising young driver Chris Hodgetts was engaged, and the team finished as class runners up in their debut season behind Alan Minshaw’s Golf GTi. However, rival Ford works driver, Richard Longman, dominated the class in 1984, winning by 29 points, leaving Brooklyn 2nd again. The 1985 season started badly, after Hodgetts tangled with bike legend Barry Sheen’s car, but the re-shelled car proved even quicker and Hodgetts fought through a tight season to emerge 2nd in the overall classification and 1st in class.
