The TR4’s gestation was slowed by too many ambitious plans that ultimately proved to be distractions, the most obvious being the ‘Sabrina’ twin-cam TRS, which was originally to have been the basis for Triumph’s new sports car. However, when finally launched in 1961, the TR4 used a modified version of the TR3’s well proven 88inch wheelbase chassis, but with a wider track, new rack and pinion steering, and the previously optional 147cc larger engine. Its smart new Michelotti designed body was much more civilised than its predecessor’s and featured wind up windows, a very efficient fresh air ventilation system and Triumph’s unique removable ‘Surrey Top’.
