From its launch in 1976 demand for the mould breaking left-hand-drive only Golf GTI outstripped supply. However, with British buyers importing their own examples, VW finally launched a right-hand-drive version in July 1979, the first batch of which were 4-speed cars produced before the 5-speed gearbox was announced in August. The car modelled is an early RHD 4-speed model, manufactured in June 1979 and registered in the September at Shrewsbury Motors. It is in original condition, having covered only 16,000 miles, and forms part of Rajan Paymaster’s collection of rare Golfs.
