Although developed as a medium and dive bomber, the Junkers JU88 found itself pressed into service in a variety of roles. One of its most effective was that of a maritime torpedo bomber, operating with great success against the Mediterranean convoys off the coast of Italy.

KG77 operated the type in this role and camouflaged their machines with this distinctive and elaborate swirl camouflage. Hoping to obliterate the light sand colour underneath and make the aircraft less conspicuous from the air against the blue Mediterranean Sea. The two torpedoes they carried were a heavy load but proved to be devastatingly effective against the thinly hulled Allied merchant ships that they encountered upon their patrols.
