Product Description
Nachtjagdgeschwader 2 (NJG 2) was a Luftwaffe night fighter wing, formed on 1st September 1940 in Gilze-Rijen, Holland. NJG 2’s role was unlike the other units of the night fighter arm; they were tasked with long-range intruder missions over the UK, disrupting night flying training and harassing the returning RAF bombers over their own airfields. Hauptmann Karl Theodor Hulshoff was Staffelkapitan of I/NJG2 and claimed his first victory on 20/21 Oct 1940, a Whitley. On the 23/24th Nov 1940, he claimed a Wellington. That same night Maj.Karl Heyse was lost and Hulshoff replaced him as Gruppenkommandeur. Hulshoff was flying Ju88C-4 R4+AB on the 8th of April 1941 when he recorded his 3rd and 4th kills, a Wellington and a Hampden. On 12th August, Blenheims of No.2 Group attacked a power station near Cologne escorted by Spitfires. NJG 2 scrambled to intercept them and Hulshoff recalled observing a single-engine fighter that he presumed was a Me109. It was in fact a Spitfire flown by Sqn Ldr H. Stephen, who promptly shot Hulshoff down. He crash landed but survived and finished the war as an Oberstleutnant commanding NJG 102.
