BMC’s relationship with Italian stylist Pininfarina appeared, at first glance, to produce a whole range of new cars during 1958 and 1959. In reality this clutch of new models, including the Cambridge and Westminster derived badge engineered range as well as the A40 modelled here, were clever re-skins of existing cars. The A40, launched in 1958, was the first of these smart, often two-tone, up to date new look models. It improved on its mechanical godfather, the A35, by offering more space front and rear plus an estate car style folding rear seat, although the opening tailgate ‘Countryman’ version wasn’t released until 1959.
