BMMO, better known as ‘Midland Red’, was a leader in bus design. Their iconic high-speed motorway express services commenced 50 years ago, on 2nd November 1959, coinciding with the opening of the M1. The service connected Birmingham and London. In 1962 the two-lane M5 opened and Midland Red introduced a relatively short motorway service between Birmingham and Worcester. 4833, modelled here, was built as a standard C5 class coach in 1961 and upgraded to CM5 class in 1962. It ran in this form from the company’s Worcester garage for 3 years, before being demoted to bus work (C5a class) and being withdrawn from service entirely in 1971.
