Thomas Whitelegg purchased this Burrell Showmans road locomotive ‘The Gladiator’ from Anderton & Rowlands in 1932 to haul and power his radio car dodgems. Whitelegg’s fun fair, founded by Thomas and Rosins Whitelegg in the 1920s and together with their three sons and two daughters, built up one of the most prominent amusement caterers of the twentieth century. Over the ensuing years they amassed such a vast amount of equipment that they travelled to events such as the Tavistock Goose fair in two sections. Whitelegg owned several Burrell Showmans road locomotives to haul and power their various rides including: King of the Belgians, Dreadnought and also a Fowler Queen Mary (scrapped in 1946).
