Until the MkIII Cortina’s midlife facelift in autumn 1973, when the more luxurious 2000E was introduced, the sporty GXL model was the top of the range and most desirable Cortina, with its contoured sports wheels, twin headlights, vinyl roof, new OHC Pinto engine and German designed 4-speed manual gearbox. The car modelled was used by Ford for publicity purposes, appearing on the front cover of the 1972 model year ‘The Cortina has all the answers’ brochure. The MkIII was replaced in summer 1976, after 1,126,559 cars had been produced, although its floorpan and mechanical architecture were carried over to the Mk4. Engine capacity: 1993cc Power: 98bhp @ 5500rpm Maximum speed: 105mph 0-60 mph: 10.7 seconds
