Named after his eldest son, Peter Coulthard founded ‘Hayton Coulthard in 1916, ironically Hayton was not interested in haulage and went into farming. Peter’s first vehicle was a motorbike and sidecar delivering newspapers around Galloway before buying his first lorry and started collecting milk cans for a local dairy. During World War II, a percentage of lorries were commandeered from haulage firms for the war effort and to safeguard the future of the company 2nd son Jimmy, who had now taken control of the business, set up Dunmhor Transport. Jimmy died in 1959 and his son Duncan left school aged 14 to help his mother run the business, taking over complete control in 1967 and oversaw the company thrive in the 70’s and 80’s. Duncan Snr retired in 2000 with 4th generation Coulthard, Duncan Jnr, becoming Managing Director.
