The launch of the Legacy in February 1989 ushered in a new era for Subaru. Previously a maker of quirky but tough well engineered cars, marketed on their heritage of aircraft engineering excellence, the Legacy was a larger, faster, and more luxurious product than any previous Subaru. The Legacy’s new four cylinder EJ boxer engines may have retained their traditional layout but were an all new design which would go on to power the Impreza to World Rally Championship glory. However, Subaru’s first ever WRC win was achieved on the 1993 New Zealand Rally by a Legacy driven by Colin McRae and Derek Ringer.
