London Central is a relatively new bus company, formed in 1989 in preparation for the privatisation of London Buses Limited. Upon privatisation in autumn 1994, London Central was purchased by the Go-Ahead Group, based in Newcastle, which itself was formed on the privatisation of Northern General Transport Ltd; previously part of the National Bus Company. This purchase was part of a policy of expansion by the Go-Ahead Group that continues today. London Central operates in southeast and central London from four operating bases: Bexleyheath, Camberwell, New Cross and Peckham. The fleet comprises over 400 double deck buses, 100 single deck vehicles and 60 artic buses.
