Go North East provides 72 million passenger journeys each year and employs around 2,100 staff. Go North East is the region’s leading public transport operator and won the prestigious UK Bus Industry Award for Marketing in 2008. The company has also been accredited ‘Investors in People’ status for excellence in developing, training and communicating with employees. The origins of the company can be traced back to 1897, when British Electron Traction acquired a major stake in Gateshead and District, Jarrow and District, and Tynemouth Electric Traction companies from their respective local councils. In the mid 1980s during the National Bus Company privatisation, Northern was sold to its management and reformed as Go-Ahead Northern which then became the founding company of Go North East
